Passage to Harbor Station
The engine featured in this painting was designed in the 1930s for the "Standard Railroad of the World" (the mighty Pennsylvania Railroad) by the famed industrial designer Raymond Loewy. The result was the beloved GG1, which is seen pulling a flatbed carrying a large ship's propeller.
"In Passage to Harbor Station, I wanted to reference classic industrial design for all transportation modes in one image."-- David Watkinson
As with all the images in the Train Series, "Museum Station" includes objects from the artist's childhood.
"By showing the enormous Egyptian statue arriving on the train, I hope to evoke some of the mystery and awe that I've always felt in the presence of great antiquities." - David Watkinson
